Feelings of guilt have a role in bringing to our attention that there is something that needs fixing. Indeed if we cannot feel guilt we may have a mental disorder. Since few of us never do anything wrong, most of us will feel guilt about some-thing, sometimes. If we act on our feeling and ask forgiveness from God and others, the feelings of guilt will have been of great immediate value.
There comes a time however when it is appropriate to set feelings of guilt aside. When we have done what we can the feelings that remain are most likely signs of our unwillingness to accept ourselves as human beings. There are many people, whom God has forgiven and who may have been forgiven by other persons they offended, who will not set aside feelings of guilt. Then the feelings get in the way of a closer relationship with God and others. They cast a shadow over those relationships. No good can come of this holding on to guilt.
When you have forgiven me, Lord, give me the wisdom to let go of whatever stands in the way of my relationship with you and others. Free me from harmful or useless feelings of guilt.
