Scientists say that the universe has been around for about 15 billion years, perhaps longer. The earth has circled the sun for over four and a half billion. The first life may have appeared on earth close to four billion years ago. Astronomers measure the dimensions of the universe in numbers so large that no one can imagine what they represent. Before all this an individual human being can feel very small and insignificant. This feeling is aggravated when we consider how many poor people are born, live and die without leaving any mark on history.
Yet we believe that each human being carries a divine spark, capable of wisdom and freedom, of love and eternal life with God. The God who made the vast universe and its vast history also made each of us in his own image and likeness and promised a God-like life if we allow him to take us to himself. God sees the divine spark in every human being.
I believe that the true meaning of my life has little to do with the vast setting of my world. It is good to remember how great you are, Lord, but do not let me put myself down when you would raise me up.
