Jesus reaches out to us simply because he wants to reach out to us. He doesn’t ask, “Is he or she worthy?” We may fear the future and think we are like Peter walking on water (Mt 14). Yet in every situation Jesus is there to reach out to us.
Peter needed to acquire this confidence because he would have to guide the Church through its beginnings. In those early days the Church often had reason to be perplexed as it labored to fulfill Jesus’ directions while undergoing persecution. Peter and the Church even in their perplexity knew they were being cared for.
When our lives become complicated and difficult we too may wonder about the Lord’s plans for us. It is at those moments that it is important to remember that Jesus does not reach out because we are or are not worthy. He does, of course, ask that we follow his direction, which always means abandoning our own will.
Protect me, Lord Jesus, from all the dangers which I face in my efforts to live for you and give witness to you. I believe you will take care of me.
