It seldom happens that we cannot pray in one way or another. Even telling the Lord we can’t pray is a kind of prayer. He accepts us as we are. This also applies to our prayer. If we are tired or worried or out of sorts that is what we can bring to our prayer. Ideal prayer in which we are both energetic and spiritual has to wait for paradise.
Our prayer is after all a dialogue of friends. We are allowed to be relaxed in the presence of a friend. There is no need to impress a friend. We don’t look for judgment from our friends. So it is in our relationship with Jesus. He knows us through and through anyway.
It is enough to hear Jesus say to us: “Come by yourselves to an out-of-way place and rest a little” (Mk 6). An excellent and humble prayer is a simple giving of ourselves to the Lord whatever our feelings or circumstances. That is a prayer he will always hear.
Here I am, Lord. Take me as I am. All I have to offer you is my heart. I know that you will not refuse me, for you love me. This day, every day and any day I can give you what you ask of me, myself.
