As the days grow shorter it is not unusual for people to feel sad. We may even believe that it has something to do with our relationship with God. Fortunately our relationship with God does not depend upon the seasons. God calls human beings to become one with himself, and human beings have human natures which react to the seasons. The peace of God is far deeper than any surface feeling. It is based upon the certainty of God’s love and the certainty that he will fulfill his promises.
We can say, as though we were there in Bethlehem 2000 years ago: “Jesus will be born on Christmas Day. He will redeem his brothers and sisters. He will reach out to the sick and the suffering, the poor and despised. Jesus will reach out to me and raise me up to be with himself beyond all time and seasons. He takes me as I am in all my humanness and enables me to become like God.”
Lord, raise me above all that is passing, all that is merely a circumstance of my life. May I see your star, your guidance, in every sky. Lead me to yourself and, through you, into the home of your Father.
