The ability to see what lies ahead is a valuable talent of human beings. To see what Jesus has in mind requires a spiritual vision. Human cleverness is not enough. There is also needed a measure of flexibility. Jesus constantly ran into the inflexibility of the Pharisees. The modern counterpart of the Pharisees are those Christians who believe that every change in the modern Church is a catastrophe. It takes great faith to follow a vision for the future into which the Holy Spirit is guiding the People of God.
However, it is only by adhering to that vision that we can fulfill our calling as disciples renewed in every age according to the signs of the times. Our age is one in which we encounter a multitude of people with great needs of body and spirit everywhere we turn. Jesus would reach out to them all through us using the means available in the modern age.
Lord, when I encounter sick and suffering people let me not turn away from their needs. Give me the wisdom to know what I can do and the courage to do it using the new ways the modern world makes available to me.
