Jesus said: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me” (Jn 14). Jesus is the truth because Jesus reveals the Father. He said: “…he who accepts anyone I send accepts me, and in accepting me accepts him who sent me” (Jn 13). Just as we see the invisible God in Jesus, so can people see a Jesus otherwise invisible to them in us.
It is true that the Lord manifests himself privately, within the heart of the prayerful believer. However, encountering Jesus in another human being is also important for two reasons: those who believe have their faith strengthened; and those who do not believe or whose faith at least is not very active can find in us a new and visible contact with Jesus. We need to find Jesus’ love in others. We need to reveal Jesus’ love to them. Like Jesus, we attract unbelievers when we offer what people really want, namely, love and compassion.
May I discover you in my brothers and sisters, Lord. May they discover you in me. Let me show in the way I speak and act the spirit of love that moved you when you lived and walked among us.
