Jesus said: “You cannot tell by careful watching when the reign of God will come. Neither is it a matter of reporting that it is ‘here’ or ‘there.’ The reign of God is already in your midst” (Lk 17). In Jesus the reign of God had already arrived. That was true then and is true now. He is within each of us and in our midst as believers. Therefore the reign of God is within each of us and among us.
Deep within the human spirit is what the poet T.S. Eliot called “the still point” where God holds us in being and where God dwells. St. Theresa of Avila described an “interior castle” in which the Lord occupies the innermost chamber. God dwells even in the unbeliever. However God’s presence becomes known only to those who seek him. That is a work of grace and faith. The center of the universe, therefore, is the human heart. It is the preferred dwelling place of the Lord of the universe.
I pray that I may come into your presence, Lord, with faith and love, that I may find you in my heart. Let my quiet times be a re-creation of my spirit so that I may always live in you while you live in me.
