The prophet Daniel prayed: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and power are his. He causes the changes of the times and seasons, makes kings and unmakes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who understand” (Dan 2). The history of the world is a constantly changing pattern of human ambitions and their short-term consequences. Even longer-term consequences may not last beyond a few lifetimes. Empires can come and go in that time. In our personal lives there have also been ambitions and short-term consequences. The dreams promise fulfillment without end, at least during our years on earth. Yet circumstances change and we are left with neither fulfillment nor dreams.
Faith rises above both the illusions and the disappointments. God does not change. God’s promises do not change. To him both empires and our personal dreams are only circumstances. He “gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who understand” (Dan 2).
Enable me to see my life in perspective, Lord, so that I do not rely on what is perishable. I put my hope in you whose promise never fails.
