“He has done everything well! He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak” (Mk 7). There are many “gurus” who tell people what they want to hear. The one Person who always tells people the truth often meets with deaf ears. Jesus’ first task is to open our ears. He doesn’t do this by shouting at us. He appeals to our hearts. Then, like Mary of Bethany, we become willing to sit at his feet and listen. There, we come to a knowledge far beyond that which can be expressed by human words. We come to know a Person.
To speak of Jesus requires that we have first heard him. Then the mute can speak. Our voice will not be that of another “guru” for it will be Jesus speaking in us. While we tell others of him Jesus is working within them to open their ears. In this way the message of salvation and healing is passed from person to person. It all begins with our own listening. It all begins in quiet reflection in the presence of the Lord.
This day, Lord, give me an open ear and a willing heart. May my voice echo what I have heard from you. Bring us all, both speaker and hearer, to the fullness of your wisdom.
