Missionaries of the Sacred Heart

The USA Province first sent missionaries to Papua New Guinea in 1947, responding to the need to rebuild destroyed missions. For 60 years US missionaries have played a significant role in building the Church in the Diocese of Kavieng. Alfred Stemper, MSC, from Winona, Minnesota was ordained the first bishop of the diocese in 1956. US MSC have staffed several parishes in different parts of the country as well as worked in Chanel College in Kokopo and Deboismenu College in Boroko.

One of the primary MSC projects in Papua New Guinea was the founding of St. Joseph Training Centre, which provides training in carpentry and mechanics to poor, young men in order to give them the skills needed to find a job and break the cycle of subsistence farming.

Since 1989, Papua New Guinea has been a independent Province within the MSC Society and its members work in schools, colleges, parishes and hospitals. Currently the USA MSC staff St. Martin Parish in Namatanai, Papua New Guinea and continue supporting St. Joseph Training Centre through the St. Joseph Training Centre Memorial Fund.
