What Types of Human Trafficking Exist in the United States? PDF Print

 

Although there is a strong emphasis on trafficking in the United States for the purpose of exploitation in the commercial sex industry, many human beings are also trafficked into the United States for forced labor. According to the 2008 Trafficking in Persons Report, 63% of the victims of human trafficking who were certified by HHS in Fiscal Year 2007 were trafficked into the United States for forced labor.

Human trafficking in the United States can take many forms. Women and children trafficked into the United States are often forced to work in massage parlors, brothels, strip clubs and escort services. Some examples of human trafficking for forced labor in the United States include domestic work in private homes, small, family businesses such as restaurants, begging rings, factories and agricultural farms. (Polaris Project). Children and young women in the United States are also trafficked within the country, and an estimated 200,000 currently face a high risk of being trafficked into the commercial sex industry.
